Edward Andrew Balk, 90, of Montgomery, passed away Friday, January 17, 2014 at Oak Terrace in Jordan. Visitation will be Sunday January 26, 2014 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Schoenbauer Funeral Home in Montgomery and one hour prior to the funeral at the funeral home. Funeral Services will be on Monday, January 27, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Montgomery. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Le Sueur.
Edward was born on February 11, 1923 in Algona, Iowa to Henry and Laura (Hammer) Balk. He attended Le Sueur School. He was united in marriage to Alice M. Wieland on November 27, 1946 and worked as a rural mail carrier for the United States Post Office retiring in 1980.
He was a member of the American Legion Club, liked to fish, help with maintenance and bookwork at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Pine River and enjoyed gardening.
Edward is survived by children, Joseph (Betty) Balk of Savage, Charles (Kathy) Balk of Brainerd, Michael (Claudia) Balk of Hastings, Constance (Curt) Jackson of Northfield and Sally (Greg) Rademacher of New Prague; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and sister Darlene Puchner of Nebraska.
He is preceded in death by his wife Alice, parents, brothers, Jake Balk, and Hugo Balk; sisters, Joyce Andresen and Mildred Aalid.
Military Honors will be provided by the Montgomery area Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers memorials preferred to Holy Redeemer Catholic School.
