GEORGE “SONNY” JOHN POMIJE, JR., age 87 of Montgomery, died on the evening of Friday, January 17, 2025 at his Traditions of Montgomery home.
George was born in Lanesburgh Township near Montgomery on July 5, 1937, to parents George Henry and Mildred “Millie” Agnes (Simon) Pomije. He graduated from Montgomery High School. On June 3, 1961, George married Elizabeth “Betty” Pomije and they made their life together in Montgomery. He worked for nearly 40 years as a punch-press operator for McQuay, where he made many lasting friends. He was a member of Most Holy Redeemer Catholic Church and was active in the Knights of Columbus for many years. He enjoyed birdwatching and hunting but absolutely loved fishing. Beyond any of those avocations, though, the loyalty and love he showed his family proved what he cared about most.
George is survived by five children, Allan Pomije of Mankato, Mark Pomije of Montgomery, Brian (Dawn) Pomije of Venice, FL, Karen (Greg) Germscheid of Madison Lake, and Michael Pomije of St. Augustine, FL; four grandchildren, Ashley (Eric) Iverson of Mankato, Chad (Halli) Germscheid of Cleveland, Cody Germscheid of Madison Lake, and Grace Pomije of Venice, FL; two great-granddaughters, Eleanor Iverson and Amelia Iverson, and a sister-in-law, Helen Pomije of Montgomery.
He was preceded in death by both of his parents; his devoted wife of 63 years, his sister, Geraldine Komarek; and his brother, Donald Pomije.
Following a private family service and interment, a public celebration of life hosted by George’s family will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Tuesday, January 28, 2025 at the Montgomery American Legion. Schoenbauer Funeral Home in Montgomery is assisting the family with their arrangements.
