Helen Dorothy Berger, 100, of Le Center, died Saturday, January 14, 2017 at The Beacon in Le Center. Visitation will be held on Friday, January 20, 2017 from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Le Center. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10 a.m. with Father Chris Shofner officiating. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery in Le Center. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. Mary's Catholic Church or a charity of the donor's choice.
Helen was born on February 24, 1916, in Belle Plaine to Joseph and Emma (Kuchynka) Knopf. She attended St. Mary's School and graduated from McKinley High School both in Le Center. Helen was an honor student award winner for both 8th and 12th grades. She received one year of teacher training and taught rural school for one year. She then worked at Spors Company in Le Center until she was united in marriage to her husband of 64 years, John Berger. John died in 2002. They made their home in Le Center and were blessed with four children. Helen enjoyed raising her children and being a homemaker until she returned to work at Spors Company until it closed in 1963. She then worked for Brinktun, Inc., Larson Industries and Farmer Seed and Nursery until her retirement.
Helen was a devout Catholic and a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Le Center. She volunteered at St. Mary's in many capacities over the years. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, walking, volunteering at the nursing home. Helen loved playing cards with her children and grandchildren. She was at peace and felt blessed to live such a long life and she loved her family very much Helen will be deeply missed by all who were privileged to know her.
Helen is survived by her children, Mary Jo McKenzie of Montgomery, Carol Ann Hanson of Mankato, and Robert John Berger of Le Center; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Vernon Stark of Savage; and many nieces and nephews.
Helen is preceded in death by her parents; her husband; daughter Helen Joyce Stremski; siblings, Erma Kelly, Phyllis Stark, and Henry Knopf; son-in-law, Russ Hanson.
