JOEL EDWARD KUKACKA, age 73 of New Prague, died on the evening of Wednesday, January 1, 2025 at Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato.
Joel was born in New Prague on June 18, 1951 to Louis and Lillian (Dejcmar) Kukacka. He attended grade school and high school in Montgomery. He dropped out of high school to enlist in the United States Army, receiving his GED. Joel developed and grew his interest in mechanics by working in the motor pool in Germany with the US Army during the Vietnam Conflict. After his service, he used the G.I. bill to further his education in mechanics and automotives. In 1980, Joel purchased his own shop, known as Stars & Stripes Garage in Heidelberg, and was a proud owner and mechanic serving the community for 44 years. Joel was a hard-working and very skilled mechanic. In his 44 years of business, he had never taken a full sick day. He loved his job and was proud to serve the community. In fact, Joel was elected to the position of Mayor of Heidelberg in November 2012. He enjoyed attending car shows and community events, listening to KCHK radio, polka music and playing slots at the casino. His family remembers him as an honest, hardworking, and caring man who was always quick to lend a helping hand.
Joel is survived by his son, Louis Kukacka of New Prague; a granddaughter, Brigid Kukacka of Millersburg; three siblings, Leon Kukacka of Le Center, Lila (Garry) Korbel of Huntington, TN, and Lucy Connolly of Houston, MO. Joel was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, Clarence, Clayton, Harold and Jeff Kukacka.
A memorial service hosted by Joel’s family will be held from 1-4 p.m. on Saturday, January 25, 2025 at the Montgomery American Legion Post #79.
