Richard Robert Meger, age 89, of rural Le Center, died peacefully on Tuesday, April 23, 2019 surrounded by his family. Visitation will be held on Friday, April 26, 2019 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Schoenbauer Funeral Home in Montgomery. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, April 27, at 11 a.m. at St. Johns Catholic Church in Union Hill with visitation two hours prior at church. Burial will be held in the St. Josephs Catholic Cemetery in Lexington. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the donors choice.
Richard was born on March 8, 1930 in Derrynane Township to Paul and Julia (Plonski) Meger. Richard attended a one-room country school and graduated from St. Wenceslaus Catholic School in New Prague and New Prague High School in 1948. Richard was united in marriage to Gertrude Neisen on June 30, 1953 at St. Johns Catholic Church in Union Hill. They made their home on the family farm for 61 years. Richard was a member of the New Prague Knights of Columbus and served on the St. Josephs Cemetery board in Lexington for over 50 years. Richard enjoyed farming, music, playing cards, cutting firewood, and carpentry. Most importantly, he enjoyed spending time with his family.
Richard is survived by children, Connie (Greg) VonBank of Montgomery, Maureen (John) Busse of Belle Plaine, Bev (Terry) Wagner of Webster, Rick (Lori) Meger of Le Center, Pete (Barb) Meger of Belle Plaine, Judy (Brett) Olson of New Prague, JoAnne (Paul) Maruska of New Prague, Chuck Meger of St. Thomas, Mary (Dave) Dooley of Lonsdale, and Bill (Lisa) Meger of St. Thomas; 29 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; sister, Theresa McNamara of Bloomington; sister-in-law, Mary Meger of Prior Lake.
Richard is preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Gertrude Meger in February 2018; his parents; brothers, Ambrose, Francis, Denny, Paul Jr., Jimmy, and George; sisters, Cecilia Giesen, and Patricia Proctor; great-grandchildren, Catherine Olson and Angelo Querubin.
